Why Does God Allow Suffering?

John 9:1-5 - NKJV - Now as Jesus passed by, He saw a man who was blind from birth. 2 And His disciples asked Him, saying, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?” 3 Jesus answered, “Neither this man nor his parents sinned, but that the works of God should be revealed in him. 4 I must work the works of Him who sent Me while it is day; the night is coming when no one can work. 5 As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.”

Many of us frequently wonder why God has allowed certain circumstances to take place in our lives; why did my relative have to pass? Why did I have to lose my job? Why did my boyfriend/girlfriend break up with me? Why did my family abandon me? Why was I born with this defect? Why did I get this terminal illness? It is easy to direct all of our pain and frustration at the easiest target, which is, in this case, often God.

However, God allowing things to happen is very different from God causing things to happen. For example, if I were to take a gun and use it to take a life, was it God's fault or mine that the life was taken? Even though God allowed it to happen, I am the one who performed the act. It is easy to simply blame God for our mistakes so that we don't have to take responsibility for our own actions. Yet, in all things, it is God's purpose that ultimately prevails.

The man that was born blind did not choose to be blind. However, he was born blind for the sole purpose of revealing the works of God through Jesus Christ. Many times, pain is the best teacher, and it is through pain that we tend to learn the most.

Suffering is painful. But it is through suffering and pain that we learn about the truth of sin and its devastating impact, as well as the truth of God's goodness and grace.

GOD bless.
