The Split Alter

1 King 13:3, 5 - And he gave a sign the same day, saying, “This is the sign which the Lord has spoken: Surely the altar shall split apart, and the ashes on it shall be poured out.”

5 The altar also was split apart, and the ashes poured out from the altar, according to the sign which the man of God had given by the word of the Lord.

An alter is a sacred place where GOD meets with man. It is a place where GOD intervenes with man's problems. The alter is a place of worship, a place where GOD communicates with mankind through the priesthood. In this story, the Israelites were divided into two kingdoms, the North (Israel) and the South (Judah). Jeroboam became a wicked king of the Northern Territory. He did so much evil before the LORD to the extent that the place of worship became a place of idol worship. GOD sent a prophet to prophesy about his wickedness and the consequences of his actions.

The alter was split in two, the ashes spilled down from the split alter; a sign that the place of worship no longer serves its original value. GOD no longer shows up in this place. His presence departed from the altar because of their wickedness. Our heart, body, and soul are a new altar for the LORD. We do not stack rocks for altars to the LORD anymore, but we instead offer our bodies not only as a living sacrifice but also as an altar to the LORD. Let us welcome His presence back into our lives. His intervention is back, so let us meet Him again in this sacred place of our heart, body, and soul. GOD bless.
