Romans 1:16-17 - 16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes, for the Jew first and also for the Greek. For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith as it is written,
“The just shall live by faith.”
To be ashamed is to be humiliated, and humiliation is something all men try to avoid. Who wants to be humiliated? Who desires to purposely paint their reputation with ridicule and shame? Nobody truly wants to experience humiliation. After all, it brings shame and embarrassment not only to an individual but also to the whole family.
According to Paul, it sounds like it is possible that preaching and believing the Gospel could cause shame to befall on you and your family. If believing and proclaiming the gospel came with shame, knowing this, Paul still chose to boldly preach it. The question is, what is it about the Gospel that gave Paul a positive attitude towards it? If it is possible that the gospel brought shame to some, why would Paul desire to partake of that which could bring shame to him?
Paul chose to be unashamed of the gospel despite the shame that it brought on him because it is the very reason he gets to live. The gospel is the news about how we get to be saved from condemnation by the works of another and not of ourselves. The bible is clear that no amount of good works that we perform will ever be enough to save us from GODS holy judgment. If no amount of our own good works will suffice to save us, why would we ever consider turning down this amazing precious gift from above?!
Believing in the gospel may bring you shame from your peers, friends, acquaintances, spouse, and even family. However, make no mistake, there is nothing to be ashamed of in regard to the gospel of Jesus Christ. The extremely short and temporary experience of ridicule from the world pales in comparison to the eternal glory and life we get to experience thanks to the gospel of Jesus Christ! GOD bless.
