Mathew 7:13-14 NKJ - 13 “Enter by the narrow gate; for wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and there are many who go in by it. 14 Because narrow is the gate and difficult is the way which leads to life, and there are few who find it.
When we think about wide gates, we think about an opening that is hard to miss and easy to access. As humans, we are easily drawn to what is "easy" that we are far more willing to settle for what requires the least amount of effort. The way of the world is wide gate, and the desires of the flesh are the broad path that leads to destruction. Everything that comes naturally, such as being unforgiving, hateful, or even selfish, are all things that are included in the broad path. Because it is broad and easy to go through, many people will take this route, not being able to see past their own selfishness and pride.
Narrow gates, however, because they are smaller and harder to enter, they require more effort. Also, because they are small, you may not even be able to fit anything else besides yourself through it, causing you to leave some things behind. There are lots of things we tend to hold on to that are toxic to us and the people around us. What are some of the things that we need to leave behind in order to go through the narrow gate? When the bad things that we've carried as baggage have been all we've ever known, it is difficult to let go of such things. To let go of them requires effort. Because it requires effort, many people do not take the narrow gate and do what is right. As Christians, we have been called to do what is right, even when it is inconvenient for us and difficult to do.
1 Peter 3:17 says, "17 For it is better, if it is the will of God, to suffer for doing good than for doing evil."
