James 1:5-6 - NKJV - "5 If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him. 6 But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for he who doubts is like a wave of the sea driven and tossed by the wind."
The bible describes someone who asks GOD for wisdom with doubting as being like a "wave of the sea." In what way are they like a wave of the sea? Waves of the sea get tossed in one direction and then the other. It has no say in where it goes but is at the mercy of the winds and tidal forces. Likewise, people who doubt are one way and then another depending on where the winds of life pushes them. They are completely at the mercy of the whims of life's circumstances. When life feels negative, then they are negative. When life feels positive, then, they are positive. When the circumstances are favorable for righteousness, then they behave righteous. When they are not, then they do not behave righteous.
Because of the winds and turbulence during a storm, the wave of the sea is chaotic and destructive. Likewise, a person who doubts is chaotic in their thinking and emotions. Verse 8 tells us, "he is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways." Doubt comes with instability while faith comes with assurance. Philippians 1:6 says, "Being confident of this very thing, that He Who has begun a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ."
Jesus was able to simply say to the wind and the storm, "Peace be still," and the wind and the storm ceased. If even the destructive forces of earth's weather obey the voice of Jesus, then even the chaos created by our double mindedness must obey His voice.
Faith comes by hearing the Word of GOD (see Romans 10:17). Let us come to GOD in faith and confidence, not in doubt. He Who is able to calm storms can grant us peace that surpasses all understanding. GOD bless.
